You've just purchased a new car, and you say to yourself:
"I'm going to make sure this doesn't end up looking like my old car".
The salesman offers you a magic serum they can apply to your car that is the shield, the armour, the guardian to all things evil against your new car and that is ceramic.
The conversation may go along the lines of:
Sales - "would you like to add a ceramic coat to your vehicle?"
You - "what is a ceramic coat?"
Sales - "Well a ceramic coat is all the protection you need, its self cleaning so you only have to hose it to clean it. It's the protector against all scratches and bird droppings"
Now that's only a story I've created in my head based on the pitches I've heard from my clientele, and while it's partially true, they don't dive into the details of everything but only what you want to hear, giving you a false indication of what the product is really about and hardly a chance at maintaining it on your vehicle.
Lets dive in.

What is ceramic? A ceramic coat is a liquid polymer that forms a strong nanolayer of protection based on active ingredients and solvents. There are many variations, and they also vary in life expectancy. A lot of them will do the same thing and have the same end goal, generally it goes without saying consumer grade wont be as strong as professional grade.
We here at Opulent choose the GYEON range based on testing we've performed on many products in the market and finding this is the best ceramic protection for our model.
GYEON coatings are Si02 based (silicone dioxide) or fluoro-modified polysilazanes with amazing properties about them.
- Amazing Hydrophobicity, - Self cleaning effectiveness, - Self healing properties - High strength coating
- Impeccable depth of gloss So what should you take from that information?
Simply put, it's a strong protective layer designed to bond to your paint's surface protecting against the harsh environment for a very long time.

Will it actually last as long as they say? While all coatings vary in life expectancy, the one thing that makes a coating last is the aftercare. That's right It's not a magic solution on its own that lasts forever, sorry to stand out against the grain.
That's the part that the dealership won't tell you, because they would like you to have the coating and although it is very strong it just not something you can leave on its own. The point still stands; they just don't tell you the right facts, but they also aren't detailers so how are they supposed to know.
While I can't vouch for all brands on the market, as long as you follow the maintenance rules, your coating will live a healthy, comfortable life.
Like I've heard before: "if you look after your coat, it will look after you"

The Facts What should and shouldn't you actually expect from your coating? #1 Protection against UV damage. Your topcoat is very sensitive to the suns Ultraviolet rays and a ceramic's no.1 job is to prevent your paint diminishing and oxidizing from the sun. #2 Animal dropping protection. While it sounds like its a failproof protection it technically is but also isn't. it gives you a saving grace in my opinion, a bit of time to get those droppings off before causing an effect, this also applies to bats and pollen drops. good general practice of removal as soon as possible is highly advisable. #3 Self cleaning While I'd love to say the coating pulls out the wash gear and gives itself a bath that's not what they mean. what that means is because a coating makes your surface so slick and sealed with high sheet angles, water and dirt just find it hard to stick to your paintwork making the time between washes longer leaving you with a cleaner vehicle. #4 Maintenance. Maintenance is crucial to any coating; you want to use the right wash products and make sure you get your coating serviced when recommended.
Having a ceramic coat makes your wash so much easier by just adjusting your wash procedure if you've not already to a 2 bucket procedure, and the end results are just as you got it home the day you picked it up from your detailer. #5 Scratch resistant. No, not they way you think. Ceramics can help prevent marring (micro scratches) with their strength and self-healing properties, but they won't prevent your ex on a rampage or the kids and their bikes.
By adding the protective coating you can ensure things like brushing your hand down the side of your vehicle accidentally will not cause any light marring or scratches. So again, treat your car like the diamond it will be and look after it.
#6 Washing.
Yes. You must wash your car, although maybe not as often. Ceramic can keep your car cleaner for longer before showing any signs of dirt. A wash routine isn't hard when you get used to the two-bucket method, but it is crucial to ward off any scratches or marring and diminish the coat. It's as important as using the right products too; ask your detailer what products are recommended for your coating.
So do I use the dealer or detailer?
Though you can use whoever you feel comfortable with.
Generally, most of the time, dealers are known to be more expensive, and you don't really know who is applying it but i can tell you 99% of the time it's not a detailer.
Even though they might have an unlimited warranty, you might be one who returns for the warranty out of many buyers, and after selling countless ceramic extras, it would be nothing to them to get it re-done, rather in-house or outsourced.
With a detailer, you know that is what they do, and in some cases, for the same price as a dealer coating, you can get other coatings applied to your vehicle, such as trims, rims, and interior coatings. You get clear-cut transparency and the knowledge of who did it and who to go back to if something goes wrong. Here at Opulent we pride ourselves on providing the knowledge our customer needs in order to maintain a perfect finish on their vehicle while advising the right product to go along side it. So why should you invest in ceramic? Now you know what a ceramic is, what it actually does, and what to expect and not expect.
The choice is up to you now, ceramic coating is a fantastic investment for any vehicle that you want to take care of and be proud of when driving around but also uphold the value of your vehicle, i mean who doesn't love a clean and clear high glossy vehicle?
